About korfball
Korf is the Dutch word for basket, and korfball would be grouped with basketball and netball but is distinct from both those games in several ways. It is a mixed gender team game (4 men and 4 women per team) and enables people of all ages and types to play together successfully. It is a passing game and teams score goals by 'shooting' the ball into a basket on a high post, originally made of willow. The game is tactical as the aim is for an attacker to get free of a defending player in order to shoot legally. All attacking players assist this positioning. An attacker may not shoot if a defender is in the right position, even if he/she is taller than the defender and can get the ball over their head. Girls defend girls and boys defend boys, but all players pass and assist each other to score.
Korfball originated in The Netherlands in 1904. It was developed by a teacher who wanted all of the boys and girls in his school to be able to play a sport together, and one that would team-work, cooperation, sportsmanship, agility and strength.
He based it on a Scandinavian game called ringball and originally it was played outside and the pitch was divided into three sections or 'divisions'.
It is still played outside in the summer but now there are two divisions and it is more often played indoors on a large court. There are 8 players per team, 4 men, 4 women. There are 2 men and 2 women as attackers and 2x2 as defender and each set occupies a 'division'. 1st attack starts with the ball but when two goals have been scored (by either team) the attackers become defenders and vice versa. That way, no player gets 'stuck' in a boring position, and all players have a chance at scoring goals

Korfball in Norfolk
In Norfolk there is a league of three divisions with six major clubs - Norwich City, Norwich Knights. Norwich ICE, Stingers, Dragons and UEA.
You can read more about them here www.norfolkkorfball.co.uk.
The clubs play indoor league matches at Norwich UEA Sportspark on Sunday late afternoon/evenings from late September to April.
Korfball has been played in Norfolk since approx 1991, when Philip Buttinger and his family moved to Norwich. Philip's father Jan was instrumental in establishing korfball in London in the 1950s and Philip has worked tirelessly to do the same in Norwich. Starting from a few players at the beginning there are now around 20 teams across the six clubs, including National league players.
Several generations play and many family members also play together. It's great for people of all ages and in particular, it is one sport which doesn't divide families into male and female activity as all can play together. It is a sport that crosses generations well and encourages players to keep training and playing games as long as they can, some people continuing well into their 60s. Senior league starts at age 14, with players starting to learn as young as 5 with mini posts and balls, so it is truly inclusive

Korfball is a mixed-sex team sport and is fun, fast and friendly. Our club has four teams, and there is a good option for everyone that wants to play - for leisure, fun and to keep a bit fit to highly competitive and committed at a higher level.
Korfball is also suitable for people of all ages - our club starts at 13 with our oldest members in their 60s. However, the sooner you start the better, so if you are thinking of playing, come and try it out at a training session for free. We really do welcome new players!
